I read with interest your article outlining the report from the NZIER on the potential for government to assist smaller ports to shut if they feel they are no longer viable [14 October].  Whilst I have not read the report itself, the article does not address the tourism activities of our ports. New Zealand is experiencing meteoric growth in its cruise tourism industry.  In fact, cruise tourism is the fastest growing sector of the broader tourism industry, increasing from approximately 17,000 cruise visitors ten years ago to an expected 138,200 visitors this season.

Mega Ships

Christening of a mega-ship is an event characterised by sheer wonderment, lots of press coverage and potentially, thousands of bookings for each voyage.  Every one of the mega-ships, built or planned, will be larger in population than many small towns in New Zealand, and most certainly, some of the port cities they will visit.  Therein lies the problem.

Whilst the cruise line will be thrilled with the fact that it has filled each of its more than 5,000 berths and pleased that it is carrying a full crew complement of more than 2,000, how would a port town such as Lyttelton in New Zealand (pop: 3,400) or even the larger Freeport Maine (pop: 7,800) cope with such a large, mobile city arriving at its shores?

An old adage tells us to spend money to make money.   This evening [11 December] TVNZ reported that $6,000 was spent on transport for the Warner Bros film studio executives during their recent visit to New Zealand.  TVNZ also reported that this sum was spent as part of the government’s efforts to keep The Hobbit in New Zealand.    Whilst this is undoubtedly true, I think that the reporting – and indeed some public sentiment – fails to recognise that far more was at stake than just a single movie project.   In fact, as soon as The Hobbit was secured, announcements for a raft of other projects immediately followed.
